The Yucatan Jug

I went to Cozumel, an island in Mexico, on my honeymoon in January, 1975. At that time, Cozumel was undeveloped except for two hotels and a small town on the island.  I went shopping in the little town and picked up this water pitcher/jug as a remembrance of our trip. Years later, I set up this still life in my studio and painted it twice. This was the second iteration and if you look closely, you’ll realize that it is an unreal construction that looks like it occupies three-dimensional space but also directs your eye to the presence of the picture plane.
